Le groupe s’est particulièrement fait connaître dans les années 1980 grâce à son utilisation emblématique du talk box, devenu l’une des signatures sonores du funk et de la musique électronique de l’époque.

Dans les années 1990, Roger Troutman et son univers musical connaissent une nouvelle vie grâce au hip-hop : de nombreux rappeurs font appel à lui et samplent ses morceaux. Ses sonorités apparaissent également dans plusieurs films devenus cultes, contribuant à inscrire définitivement Zapp et le talk box dans la culture populaire.

Malheureusement, l’aventure des frères Troutman se terminera de façon tragique, avec la mort de Roger Troutman en 1999, mettant brutalement fin à l’histoire d’une famille qui aura profondément marqué le funk et le hip-hop.

Unfortunately, the Troutman brothers’ journey would end tragically, with the death of Roger Troutman in 1999, bringing a sudden end to the story of a family that had left a lasting mark on funk and hip-hop.
